another day, another reason to attend

As part of Theremin Day – DO NOT TOUCH people will be invited by Ms Hypnotique to have a go on a real Theremin! This will be on an informal basis, in-between the programmed performances. This is a rare opportunity to get an introduction to one of the world’s most outlandish musical instruments, with the help of one of the nation’s most renowned Thereminists.

Here is rather poor quality video of Ms Hypnotique introducing Paul O’Grady (yes, that one!) to the Theremin:

If you are keen to sample this and all the other delights of Theremin Day, why not grab a ticket!

*rushes in* next reason…

Theremin Day is for a great cause!

I am delighted that this event will help to raise the profile and funds of fizzPOP.

For those of you who don’t know, fizzPOP is the Birmingham hackerspace. Hackerspaces are a really important part of any creative community as they help to engage people (broadly speaking geeks) in a physical collaborative environment. They provide for a niche that is often otherwise not “joined up”. This has and will no doubt continue to result in some awe-inspiring projects and outcomes. Birmingham needs a fizzPOP!

As a self-funding labour of love, I salute the founders of fizzPOP for their commitment and ongoing efforts!

That is why I am so delighted to be involved in some small way, and that is why I hope you will show your support by turning up next Saturday. Advanced tickets recommended – Eventwax

8 days left, 8 reasons to attend

With only eight days left until the first Theremin Day, I wanted to present eight reasons (one each day) why I think you should attend. Here is the first:

A video showing one of the Optical Theremins I have built and will be using for my exclusive performance of “Steve Reich’s Pendulum Music for Optical Theremin and torch”. These same Optical Theremins will be built by people in the (sold out) workshop on Theremin Day.

This performance will take place as part of the evening of live Theremin Performances – Do Not Touch. Tickets are available here – EventWax

For an idea of what Pendulum Music sounds like, here is a preview of a Sonic Youth performance of it. At Theremin Day the feedback sound will be replaced by that of the Optical Theremin, and the performance will be in complete darkness.
